Eisegesis: Wednesday's Word Of The Week

The Lutheran Lexicon

Eisegesis is the opposite of exegesis (definition of exegesis is coming soon)  The process of misinterpreting a text by imposing one's own idea over top of the text.  Reading a presupposed idea 'into' the text.  In eisegesis, rather than the text informing and shaping the reader, the reader incorrectly forms and shapes the text according to their own presuppositions.
