Not Imperatives - But Gifts

In his letter to the churches of Galatia, the Apostle Paul speaks of fruit of the Spirit. The key, though, is that the Holy Spirit does not ‘demand’ obedience via joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. But instead, the Holy Spirit ‘produces’ joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. And so, when we speak of love or joy or peace, we do so, not as if they are the Holy Spirit’s imperatives unto obedience, but as wonderful gifts bestowed upon the Bapitzed.
