What Makes The Good Shepherd Good?

We often see pictures of the Good Shepherd cuddling little lambs. However, I believe a more accurate picture is seeing the Good Shepherd as the one who fights the wolves in order to protect lambs.

Indeed, our Good Shepherd goes after wolves. He attacks them by laying down His life before them. He bears the bite of sin, He gives Himself into the fangs of death, and He lays Himself between us and the satanic wolf. This is what makes the Good Shepherd truly good.

When all is said and done, and after the Good Shepherd is devoured by the wolf of death, the Good Shepherd bursts out of the belly of death - breaking the belly and teeth of the wolf of death.

We shall not fear, not because we are cuddled by the Good Shepherd, but because the Good Shepherd and His staff protect us.
